Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn travelled in Italy with her husband Wilhelm and son Sebastian between 1839 and 1840. She wrote a kind of music diary on the feelings and the emotions she felt during the trip. Her husband sketched the incipit of each song, describing the most important steps of the trip: this work is included in the Reise-Album kept at the Berlin Staatsbibliothek.This paper compares the iconographic and musical reception of some topoi characterizing Italy and shown in the Reise-Album. It particularly concerns popular dances and genre paintings and analyzes the links between the clichées consolidated in North European imaginary and the real outcomes of direct experience.
