Two different microbial mats developing on reservoir ponds, 53 PSU, were isolated from the solar salterns of Tuticorin. Firstly, archaeal and bacterial diversity in these mats were analyzed along the vertical section at one cm intervals. Culture-independent 16S rRNA gene analysis revealed that both bacteria and archaea were extremely rich in their diversity along the vertical profile.
