Wear of sliding surfaces leads to the failure of mechanical components, financial loss and ultimately, energy inefficiency. Antiwear additives can be included in lubricants, which adsorb at contacting surfaces and undergo chemical transformation to form protective coatings. However, the film formation of antiwear coatings is ill-defined, especially on non-ferrous surfaces such as aluminium alloys. In this experiment, the temperature-induced transformation of zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) will be investigated as a function of time at the interfaces formed between dodecane and iron oxide, silicon oxide and aluminium oxide.
