Evaluation of Management of Medical Libraries based on Medical Council of India (MCI) Standards: A Study from North-East India

This study assessed how far the Minimum Requirements for the Medical College, 1999 given by the Medical Council of India have been followed in the Medical Libraries of North-East India. Seven Medical Libraries were surveyed and data was collected using the help of a checklist-based questionnaire. Librarians of surveyed medical libraries are aware of the Minimum Standard Requirements, 1999, MCI. The findings of this research showed that twenty requirements (like basic library infrastructure, book collection, library automation, departmental libraries, etc.) were fulfilled by all the medical libraries. Two requirements (like library staff i.e. library assistants, and daftaries) were not met, while eight requirements (library area, seating capacity, journal collection, librarian and other staff, e-library) were just partially met. This research will assist administrators of medical colleges in developing policies and strategies to address issues with library infrastructure, insufficient library personnel, and resource collection which are major challenges facing medical libraries.
