Santa Monica, California -- May 15th, 1958 -- A giant crane lowers a tropical palm tree into place on the new 'volcanic' island rising from the ocean at Pacific Ocean Park, Santa Monica, California. Nearing completion in time for the park's opening July 1, this will be the only South Sea Island in America. It will feature a colorful Banana Train that will take visitors on a thrilling ride through the crater of the 'live' volcano shown under construction in this photo. The train also goes through such other wonders as a dense jungle, a tropical thunderstorm, and an earthquake. The colorful, authentically recreated South Sea Island is just one of more than 45 unusual attractions in the new, multi-million dollar family entertainment center. -- 30 --".
