Scenedesmus vacuolatus represents a model algae, which can be grown in synchronized cultures and used to test the effects of chemicals on autotrophic organisms. In order to develop a microarray for S. vacuolatus for testing the effect of chemicals on the transcriptome the cDNA of S. vacuolatus was sequenced. Therefore, algae were exposed to various chemicals or non-chemical stressors to increase the abundance of inducible genes that may otherwise be expressed at very low levels. The mRNAs from the different treatments were combined and used for cDNA sequencing.
