The Development of Journalism Culture in Indonesia post-New Order era and the Reemergence of the Pancasila Press: A Case Study of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) and Chineseness Representation in Kompas and Republika in 2005 - 2019

This study examines how Kompas and Republika reported on Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) in relation to Chineseness narrative in post–New Order Indonesia. It finds that journalists continue to follow the Pancasila Press model, invented by the New Order regime, which emphasizes national unity, social harmony, and political stability. Even without direct state control, media owners, public opinion, and market pressures encourage cautious reporting. As a result, the press promotes tolerance and diversity but often avoids discussing inequality and injustice. This approach shifts attention away from deeper structural problems and helps protect political and economic elites during times of social tension.
