Fishermen in Bacia de Campos: health from the perspective of food (in)security

Abstract This article assumes that Food and Nutrition Security is a basic condition for a healthy life. Regular food in sufficient quantity and quality is the first step against morbidity, or against factors that lead to illness and death. The field research analyzed the Food and Nutrition Security conditions of the population of artisanal fishermen from seven municipalities located in Bacia de Campos, state of Rio de Janeiro. The findings are worrisome, as they do not match the resources received by the municipalities, in terms of royalties and special participations, which are added to other transfers and sources of revenue. Food supply programs are urgently needed. The data are part of the Pescarte Project, a partnership among UENF/Petrobras/Ibama.
