A strictly anaerobic, Gram-stain-positive, spore-forming, short rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated JNU-WLY1368, was isolated from Chinese strong-aroma liquor fermented mud. Glucose, galactose, cellose, xylose, sucrose, lactose, rhamnose, arabinose and lactate supported growth. The major end product from glucose fermentation was caproate. Acetate could significantly promote growth and caproate production of the strain. Strain JNU-WLY1368 represents the main caproate-producing bacteria in Chinese strong-aroma liquor fermentation. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain JNU-WLY1368 belonged to the family Ruminococcaceae.
