Measuring Acequia Functionality: Developing a Tool for Assessing New Mexico's Community-Based Irrigation Systems

This professional project provides a synthesis of existing knowledge with
respect to New Mexico's acequias, and develops a tool, the Acequia Functionality
Assessment, for evaluation of factors that contribute to the operation of acequias.
The report summarizes and highlights the communal nature of acequia operations,
describes resilience theory from which to view the past, present and future of
acequias, outlines the various benefits and services that acequias provide, and
discusses the challenges currently facing acequias to include demands on land and
water resources, changing socio-economic conditions, and climate change factors.
