Gloeocapsopsis sp. 1H9 represents the first cultivable and clonal cyanobacterium isolated from the Atacama Desert. This unicellular cyanobacterium is highly tolerant to desiccation and belongs to a phylogenetic clade of cyanobacteria scarcely studied. This cyanobacterium and its close evolutionary relatives like Chroococcidiopsis spp. dominate hypolithic communities in warm deserts.
