East Antarctic soils were sampled, and their ammonia oxidation potentials and community structure of ammonia oxidizing microorganism were investigated. Ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) were dominant in the upper and lower layers, respectively. For AOB-amoA, all operational taxonomic units (OTUs) classified into Nitrosospira were identified, the dominant two of which corresponded to Mount Everest cluster. For AOA-amoA, some OTUs were similar to those of High Arctic soil and Antarctica soil.
