This study investigates the presence and spread of antibiotic-resistant E. coli in a Swedish urban water system, with much higher levels near a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), suggesting its role in spreading these bacteria. All tested bacterial strains were resistant to multiple antibiotics, with many strains assigned to lineages linked to human infections. This highlights the need for better wastewater treatment to reduce environmental and public health risks.
