Walvis Ridge, located in the eastern South Atlantic Ocean, is one of the few known locations where it is possible to recover undisturbed, complete, and possibly expanded Paleogene sediments over a wide range of water depths. 位于东南大西洋的沃尔维斯脊，是少数几个能够从广泛的水深范围内恢复未受干扰、完整且可能扩展的始新世沉积物的已知地点之一。2003年夏季在沃尔维斯脊外侧实施的海洋钻探计划（ODP）第208航次的主要目标，即是恢复诸如白垩纪/第三纪（K/T）边界、始新世/渐新世（E/O）边界、古新世/始新世热事件（PETM）以及埃尔莫事件等“关键”转换期的完整复合序列。
