Microorganisms in the soil, especially those closely surrounding plant roots, are known to influence a myriad of plant traits. Here we investigated how rhizosphere microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) impact plant flavor, specifically the spiciness of mustard seeds. In a greenhouse study, we manipulated the soil microorganisms around Brassica juncea plants, and characterized the glucosinolate content of the plant seeds after harvest.
