Teacher adoption of motivating or demotivating teaching styles is a key factor in favouring or thwarting student inner motivational resources, and it is shaped by a range of factors some of them underexplored such as self-compassion. This study aimed at assessing the relationships between self-compassion and adoption of motivating and demotivating teaching styles, by testing the mediating role of cognitive reappraisal. A convenience sample of ninety-five teachers filled out measures of self-compassion, cognitive reappraisal, and adoption of motivating and demotivating styles. The results confirmed that self-compassion indirectly relates to adoption of motivating and demotivating teaching styles through cognitive reappraisal. Effects are stronger for the demotivating styles. Implications for teachers and students are discussed.
