Hyperglycemia Exacerbates Periodontal Destruction via Systemic Suppression of Regulatory T Cell Number and Function

Briefly, the present study shows for the first time that hyperglycemia reduces Treg cells both numerically and functionally in a mouse model of experimental periodontitis. The study also shows that impaired immune tolerance may contribute to the exacerbation of periodontal tissue destruction.
