OSCAR(Ocean Surface Currents Analyses Real-time)是一个正在进行的研究项目,旨在改进用卫星数据计算表层洋流和验证方法。
u:ocean surface zonal currents (m/s)
v:ocean surface meridional currents (m/s)
um:ocean surface zonal currents maximum mask (m/s)
vm:ocean surface meridional maximum mask (m/s)
(Note: Maximum Mask velocity is the geostrophic component at all points any concurrent Ekman and buoyancy components)
OSCAR (Ocean Surface Currents Analyses Real-time) is an ongoing research project aimed at improving satellite data-based methods for calculating and validating surface ocean currents. Developed by the Earth and Space Research Center (ESR), the OSCAR dataset generates global surface ocean currents by processing satellite observations of sea surface height, wind and sea surface temperature, along with data from various in-situ instruments. Calculations are conducted using a quasi-steady geostrophic model, combined with wind-driven eddy-viscous ageostrophic components and thermal wind adjustments, to derive the mean surface current velocities within the top 30 meters of the upper ocean.
In 2009, the OSCAR product was updated to produce data on a 1/3-degree grid, allowing the observation of numerous small-scale features in the high-resolution dataset. The spatial coverage of OSCAR has been expanded to as close to coastlines as possible, and it varies over time, expanding and contracting in line with the boundaries of available satellite data. A dynamically improved model for the equatorial region has been established in the 1/3-degree OSCAR system.
The involved variables are as follows:
u: ocean surface zonal currents (m/s)
v: ocean surface meridional currents (m/s)
um: ocean surface zonal currents maximum mask (m/s)
vm: ocean surface meridional maximum mask (m/s)
Note: The maximum mask velocity refers to the geostrophic component at all points combined with concurrent Ekman and buoyancy components
