Topics include: whether the respondent approves of Australian participation in the peace-keeping force in the Middle East; whether the respondent approves of aluminium smelters being built in locations such as the Hunter Valley of New South Wales or the Portland area of Victoria, and if there should be government assistance for such projects; whether the respondent approves of the proposed dam for hydro electricity to be built in the wilderness of south-west Tasmania; whether low alcohol beer has had a beneficial effect on the community compared with regular beer; the respondent's average number of alcoholic drinks per day and whether he sometimes drinks more liquor than he thinks he should; whether the present balance of power between the Australian States and the Commonwealth Government is about right and whether the powers of the Senate in the national Parliament are about right; and, for women, whether she is responsible for all or most of the household shopping, whether she is employed, and approximately how much money is spent weekly on food and groceries. Background variables include: age; sex; marital status; level of education; country of birth; household composition (number of persons in household, number children under age 5, number of children between 5-12 years old, number of children between 13 and 17 years old, age of the youngest person, and number of employed persons); whether respondent has moved in last two years; tenure of dwelling; occupation of self and head of household; voting enrolment; vote intention; income; and telephone ownership.
