The fine-structure constant—approximately 1 over 137—has been regarded as one of the deepest mysteries in physics for over a century. It is a pure number, dimensionless, apparently arbitrary, and measured rather than derived. Pauli was obsessed with it. Feynman called it one of the greatest damn mysteries of physics. The canvas model provides the answer. The fine-structure constant is not a fundamental constant of nature. It is a threshold. Specifically, it is the threshold for photon formation—the combined intensity that electric and magnetic waves must exceed to create a photon. The value 1 over 137 is the measure of how easily this intersection occurs. This reframing is not limited to electromagnetism. Every gauge coupling is a threshold. The strong coupling is the threshold for gluon formation. The weak coupling is the threshold for W and Z boson formation. The gravitational coupling is the threshold for graviton formation. None of these numbers is arbitrary. Each is the condition that must be met for a specific wave intersection to produce a specific particle. The threshold is a fixed property of the canvas. It does not change when the fields change. Stronger fields produce higher-energy photons, but the coupling strength—the probability of threshold crossing—remains constant. This is why the fine-structure constant is the same in all experiments. The question "why 1 over 137?" is the wrong question. It is like asking why a square block does not pass through a round hole. The threshold is the shape of the hole. The wave intersection either matches it or it does not. The right question is "why does the electromagnetic subspace have the geometry it does?"—a question about the internal structure of the canvas, the same structure that determines the dimensionality of space, the gauge group, and the number of fermion generations. The specific value remains to be derived from the internal geometry. What has been achieved is the recognition that it is a threshold, not a mystery.
