The use of heterologous probes in legume mapping efforts led to the realization that some genome conservation existed between Phaseolus vulgaris, Vigna radiata, soybean and Vigna unguiculata. A set of RFLP clones that exhibited polymorphism in each of the mapping populations was used to generate linkage maps for Phaseolus vulgaris, Vigna radiata, and soybean. These maps allowed assessment of linkage conservation and collinearity among these three organisms.
