These are data files associated with, Lovett, G., Hart, J., Christenson, L. and Jones, Clive G. Caterpillar guts and ammonia volatilization: retention of nitrogen by gypsy moth larvae consuming oak foliage. Oecologia 117, 513–516 (1998). This study investigated whether defoliation of forest canopies could accelerate ecosystem nitrogen losses via ammonia (NH3) volatilization. These data were generated in laboratory experiments that measured volatilization of NH3 from gypsy moth caterpillars feeding on oak leaves. This dataset is a contribution to the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, and is part of the Long term monitoring of forest ecosystems: Nutrient cycling archive. File list: Ammonia Volatilization Protocol.odt: laboratory protocol for these experiments. ammvol2 MV.xlsx: data spreadsheet. Standard Runs 3.xlsx: results of standard run to determine what percent recovery this method gives. NH3vol_data_dictionary_final.csv: definitions for data column headers and codes used.
