This study tested the hypothesis that surface treatments of semi-conducive materials will influence the composition of indigenous subsurface microbial communities in low redox potential environments (ORP -100 to -450 mV) . To evaluate this hypothesis, enrichment culture AMR-1 was enriched from PAH-contaminated sediments under fumarate-reducing conditions. Once enriched, bench--scale microcosms were prepared using AMR-1 and surface-modified granular activated carbon (GAC) and zero valent iron (ZVI). We evaluated indigenous microbial community responses to the capping materials using the 16S rRNA amplicon surveys.
