The subungual scraping technique. A small amount of 1% carbomer gel was deposited in each palm and the distal nail grooves were filled in by scraping from the opposite palm. One sterile single use vaccinostyle collected subungual debris from each nail that were placed on a slide. The procedure was performed on three fingers (index, middle and ring fingers) of each hand. SST slides were prepared for microscopic reading. A drop of 25% potassium hydroxide (KOH) cleared the preparation. The slides were analyzed under an optical microscope (Olympus BX41®, Japan) within 3 hours, looking for mites, eggs and scybala. Each slide was analyzed twice, once by the principal operator (LG) and once by an experienced technician (SH).
