The appearance and infrastructure of the villages are important factors for the quality of life in rural areas. Economic, demographic and socio-cultural changes pose great challenges for the villages and the people living there. The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia supports the development of places and districts of up to 10,000 inhabitants within the rural area of North Rhine-Westphalia with funding from the joint task "Improvement of agricultural structure and coastal protection" (GAK) and since 2018 with additional funding from the state budget of North Rhine-Westphalia. The aim of the funding is to secure and further develop rural areas as living, working, recreational and natural spaces. The measures are intended to contribute to a positive development of the agricultural structure, to the improvement of the infrastructure of rural areas and to a sustainable strengthening of economic strength.
