"Reachability Analysis of Smartphone Touchscreen Areas"

"Touchscreen accessibility is influenced by how users hold their devices, but existing design guidelines often overlook grip-dependent variations in reachability. In this work, we analyze the reachability of the touchscreen in different grip configurations, including one-handed and two-handed use in portrait and landscape orientations. We introduce the concept of a grip-specific accessibility map, which models the areas of the screen that users can comfortably reach under each condition. To support this analysis, we developed a custom measurement tool that enables the consistent capture of reachability data across repeated sessions. Using this tool, we conducted studies to evaluate the impact of grip on touchscreen interaction. Our findings contribute to design recommendations for mobile user interfaces that account for user grip and promote more inclusive and ergonomic interaction."
