The Southern Kuril Islands, referred to as the Northern Territories in Japan, include Iturup Island, Kunashir Island, Shikotan Island and the Habomai Islands. Their Chinese aliases are Yitulupu Island / Zezhuo Island, Kunashir Island / Guohou Island, Shikotan Island / Sedan Island and Hebamayi Islands / Chibuwu Islands respectively. Located in the southwestern part of the Kuril Islands, their geographical coordinates range from 43°21′38″N to 45°33′25″N and 145°23′55″E to 148°53′37″E. They face Hokkaido across the Nemuro Strait. The areas of the four main islands are 3163.76 km², 1489.91 km², 245.08 km² and 93.24 km² respectively, among which Iturup Island is the largest. The total area of the Southern Kuril Islands is 4994.69 km², with a coastline length of 1434.09 km. The Southern Kuril Islands are a disputed territory between Russia and Japan, and have been under the jurisdiction of Russia since the end of World War II. The archipelago boundary data was compiled based on remote sensing images from Google Earth, with reference to relevant cartographic information.
