资源简介:
In July 2015, an archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology at land adjoining 66 High Street North, Stewkley, Buckinghamshire. The work was carried out to inform an outline planning application for the demolition of 66 High Street North and the residential development of the site. The fieldwork comprised the excavation of six trenches. The Buckinghamshire Historic Environment Record records no known heritage assets within the proposed development site. Archaeological interest in the site is derived from its location within the centre of the village of Stewkley, which has its origins in the Saxon period and its proximity to the routes of two Roman roads. The evaluation identified a number of ditches corresponding to a north-east/south-west orientated field system. Pottery dating from the Middle to Late Iron Age was recovered from the silted fills of these ditches. A broadly contemporaneous pit containing Middle to Late Iron Age pottery was also identified. Medieval plough furrows, the remains of the open field system that once surrounded the village of Stewkley, were encountered across the majority of the site. In addition, the evaluation also recorded an undated ditch.
