We are collaborating on a project with Yegnasew Teferi, University of Gondar and Pascale Kropf, Imperial College,to understand immune mechanisms associated with the high rate of relapse in patients with visceral leishmaniasis and HIV co-infections. In the project, we will follow VL patients with and without HIV co-infection from diagnosis through to cure, and for many of the HIV infected patients, relapse. Parasite isolates will also be collected and cultured from these patients and this parasite collection represents a unique opportunity to develop a detailed picture of the diversity of parasites in a well-defined and well-phenotypes cohort of patients in this region.
