Anti-Oedipus I: Logic of Flows, Lecture 4, 18 January 1972

<p><em>The Deleuze Seminars</em> is a collection of audio recordings, transcriptions, and English translations of, and supplemental materials from, the lectures French philosopher Gilles Deleuze gave during his career at the University of Paris 8.</p>

<p>During his first year at Vincennes, where Deleuze began in fall 1970, he taught two seminars, back-to-back in the same three-hour weekly sessions, one titled “Logic and Desire”, the other titled “Spinoza’s Logic” (with no documents on either currently available). Hence, the first transcripts available correspond to Deleuze’s second year at Vincennes as he continues to expand the concepts developed for <em>Anti-Oedipus </em>(published in March 1972) but also with the long view of the second volume, <em>A Thousand Plateaus</em>, in progress with Félix Guattari. Focusing on this forthcoming book, Deleuze with Guattari develop only one text for publication corresponding directly to the seminar, their first jointly published essay titled “La synthèse disjonctive”, in the journal <em>L’Arc</em> 43 (1970), an issued dedicated to Pierre Klossowski.</p>

<p>In session 4, 18 January 1972, this extremely fragmentary session consists mainly of two responses by Deleuze to student questions and also of Deleuze’s reiteration of the three tasks of schizo-analysis. The first question concerns the axes of code and axiomatics proposed by Deleuze, then desire’s investment of the social field, and also the investment of the social field by desiring machines. Another question concerns the Schreber case, whether the social investment takes several generations for the paranoiacs to be established. Deleuze manages to express a certain hope that rather than ultimately reterritorializing on artificial land, the movement of deterritorialization might create a new earth. The session ends with Deleuze disagreeing with a student’s Lacanian emphasis who insists that the generational question is relevant, to be pursued the following week.</p>

<p>Cette séance 4, le 18 janvier 1972, est très fragmentaire, c’est-à-dire le dernier segment du cours où il s’agit des questions que soulève la schizo-analyse, avec une référence implicite à la quatrième partie de l’<em>Anti-Oedipe</em>. Une première question posée concerne les axes de code et d’axiomatique proposés par Deleuze, puis l’investissement du champ social par le désir, et aussi l’investissement du champ social par les machines désirantes. Une autre question concerne le cas Schreber, à savoir si l’investissement social prend plusieurs générations pour que les paranoïaques s’établissent.</p>
