Southern Hemisphere tree-rings as proxies to reconstruct Southern Ocean upwelling: Dataset

Please find V3 as the latest version of the dataset. 

Why is there a new version posted? Data_V1.xlsx contained some duplicate lines which could lead to confusion, and required an update. Data_V2.xlsx was uploaded to solved the duplicate issue of _V1Data_V3.xlsx has been updated following recommendations from peer review. Tab 1 now includes the full tree-ring records, as shown in Supplemetary Material of the publication (previously only 1980-2017 were in the .xlsx file as these are put through the analytical workflow, as described in the paper). _V3 also contains adjusted HYSPLIT and GLODAP tabs which analyze data using (Orsi et al., 1995) and (Freeman and Lovenduski, 2016) polar front positions, whereas previus versions only use (Orsi et al., 1995). This is also more completely described in the paper.

Tab1 TreeRings_Full. Shows all tree-ring radiocarbon measurements made in preparation for this work. 

Tab2 "Tree Ring 14C Measurements": The data presented include 280 new tree-ring radiocarbon measurements from Southern Hemisphere sites in Chile and New Zealand, from 1980-2017. Alongside 50 previously published measurements, these data are used to understand latitudinal gradients in radiocarbon in the Southern Hemisphere. (see manuscript Fig. 2).

Tab 3 "Mean DD14C": In associated manuscript, we describe how tree-ring measurements are compared to Southern Hemisphere background radiocarbon. These data are the mean difference, per site, (see manuscript Fig. 3).

Tab 4 "HYSPLIT": This tab includes a summary of back-trajectory modelling data, indicative of how much time back-trajectories spent in Southern Ocean zones with respect to each sampling site. 

Tab 5 "GLODAP": For each given Southern Ocean zone and ocean sector (Indian, Pacific, Atlantic), GLODAP data was used to understand what surface ocean radiocarbon looks like, to provide context to the rest of our analyses. The data shown in tab are summary means. The original data is public and found at https://glodap.info/index.php/merged-and-adjusted-data-product-v2-2023/ 

Tab 5 "Histogram": This tab simply displays histogram data from manuscript Fig 2. (e/f) in tabular form.
