Expression of Stay-Green in Dhurrin-Free Sorghum

<p>Experiments were conducted to quantify the effects of dhurrin metabolism on stay-green drought tolerance of sorghum. Near isogenic lines (NILs) and near isogenic hybrids (NIHs) with contrasting dhurrin production characteristics were examined under post-flowering drought conditions in controlled and a field production environments. A reduction in chlorophyll content in the dhurrin-free genotype was only noted in one genetic background indicating a genotype-specific response. These studies did not indicate a strong causal relationship between dhurrin biosynthesis and expression of stay-green drought tolerance.</p>
