VPRS 2242 Steering Committee Minutes and Papers Concerning the Amalgamation of the Emily McPherson College with Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

The amalgamation steering committee was established in May 1976 to examine and make recommendations on the various issues relating to the amalgamation of Emily McPherson College with Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). It consisted of representatives from both institutions and the Education Department. The impetus for amalgamation came from a recommendation of the Commission on Advanced Education and was agreed to in principle by the Emily McPherson College Council in May 1975. Amalgamation progressed in stages until 1979, when it was completed with the signing of a legal agreement in March and the transfer of the Colleges assets in April. The final meeting of the amalgamation steering committee was held in May 1979.This series contains minutes, correspondence, copies of the final amalgamation agreement, and copies of drafts of the agreement.Negotiation CommitteeThis was established by May 1975 and appears to have been something of a predecessor to the steering committee. It ran until at least August 1975. Minutes and papers relating to this committee can be found in VPRS 2242 /P1. Note that some of the files titled negotiation committee actually contain steering committee records. The files were titled this way when in active use. The reason for the apparent mistitling is not known.
