In this study, we collected samples from three locations in Guaymas Basin in order to garner evidence on anaerobic biodegradation of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons. Metagenomic sequencing was employed to characterize the microbial community and identify potential hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria via genomic reconstruction. Our results expand the diversity of hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial and the fate of higher-molecular liquid hydrocarbons that are also abundant in these hydrothermal ecosystems.
