Replication data for: Zambia (2008): Concurrent Partners Focus on Scales Study

This study design is mainly for a FoQus on Scales study among sexually active adults ages 20 to 40. This age group will further be broken down into two smaller age groups for compatibility purposes during the discussions. The suggested age groups are: 20-29 years and 30-39 years. This study aims to answer the following questions: 1. What are the determinants of concurrent relationships among sexually active adults ages 20 to 49 in Zambia? 2. How should suggested determinants be defined and measured using multi-item scale? We would use a combination of both emergent and adaptive approaches of FoQuS on Scales. The emergent approach allows researchers to start afresh and allows the target group to specify determinants as they see fit without being constrained by a pre-existing framework. This approach is particularly useful for behaviors that are not very well understood. In the adaptive approach, we introduce a few determinants that have been found to be important either through previous research or through our own behaviour change framework and check for their relevance and importance before finding ways to capture them through scale items.) 3. How do target audiences define CSP? What terminologies are used by people for the different types of CSP? 4. Are there different types/ patterns of CSP? What are they? The study will examine how target population defines concurrent relations as well as free listing determinants of concurrent relationships. It will further explore relevance and definitions of a minimum of 5 to 6 determinants based on the PSI Behavior Change Framework, findings from a literature review on determinants of having concurrent partners and input from research and program staff. Foc us group discussions would be stratified by age, gender and area of residence since determinants of concurrent partnerships are likely to vary by these variables. These demographic variables were found to be associated with whether or not people have a concurrent partner. Thus 16 focus group discussions will be conducted.
