Belinda Gillies Field Journal #1

Belinda Jane Gillies worked in the Museum of Victoria’s ornithology department from 1979 to 1992. From 1984 to 1987 she was the Acting Curator of Birds. During this time she was also the editor of Emu, the scientific journal of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (now Birds Australia).
In 1988 Gillies became the Secretary of the RAOU and continued in this role until 1992. For much of this time she was also the RAOU’s representative on the Council of the Gould League of Victoria. Since 1990, Belinda Gillies (now Belinda Isles) has co-owned/managed Australia’s most prestigious natural history bookshop.
This field journal was produced by Gillies between 1980 and 1983, while she was working as the Assistant Curator of Birds (assisting Allan McEvey, the then Curator of Birds). It details the expeditions undertaken by the ornithology department during this time, including the Victorian Wader Study and the North-west Australia Wader Expedition.This expedition of 194 tasks is fully transcribed and validated.
