资源简介:
This collection comprises image, text, spreadsheet and CAD data from an archaeological evaluation on land at Royal Oak Quarry, Danbury. This work was undertaken by Archaeology South-East in April 2021. Thirty-three evaluation trenches were excavated within the Phase IV quarry area. Nine trenches contained archaeological features. Evidence of medieval land use was identified primarily in the west of the site and the remains comprised a small number of pits, postholes and ditches from which late 12th- to 14th-century pottery was recovered. An extensive (up to 18 metre wide) refuse pit and possible associated fence lines lie alongside the Old London Road to the north of site and suggest an occupation area nearby. At some point between the late 16th and 19th centuries an effort was made to backfill a natural hollow near the north of the site with clay, late 16th-century brick and tile.
