Airborne Emission / Effluent at Lucas Heights Science & Technology Centre and the NMC (1999-2007)

Airborne radionuclide emissions were monitored at 16 discharge stacks at the Lucas Heights Science & Technology Centre (LHSTC) and the National Medical Cyclotron (NMC). For the major LHSTC stacks, airborne emissions were passed through High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters to remove particles and through beds of activated charcoal to trap and minimise radioiodines and other gases prior to discharge through the stack. All stacks were sampled continuously by drawing off a proportion of the exhaust airflow and passing it through sampling equipment appropriate for the target radionuclides. Ambient levels of iodine-131 in air were continuously monitored at the LHSTC.
