资源简介:
Syphillis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum sub-species pallidum (TPP), a nonculturable Spirochaete bacteria. In recent years, global Syphillis prevalence has been increasing, with an estimated 12 million cases annually. The syphilis genome was sequenced in 1998, and is 1.14Mbp in length, with approximately 1090 open reading frames. However, sequencing and genomic epidemiology to date has been restricted because the bacteria cannot be robustly cultured in vitro. Fortunately, a well-established rabbit model exists for in vivo culture of TPP, and this provides an opportunity to use an experimental evolutionary approach to exploring the selective pressures that act upon TPP within the host.
