Disentangling rainfall and water management in surface hydrology

This archive contains Data and Code to create figures for the manuscript: Disentangling rainfall and water management in surface hydrology. Abstract Nonlinear dynamical systems abound in nature motivating nonlinear methods to unravel their complexity. A prime example is the interdependent confluence of rainfall and managed water releases on surface hydrology, complicated where managed releases are remote from the surface hydrology of interest. Here we disentangle rain--driven hydrological response from changes induced by remote water management using data--driven estimates of the state--dependent derivatives between water levels, rain, and managed flow. To exemplify the method we examine hydrological response of Everglades wetlands to rainfall and remote water management, a central concern to inform water management decisions and gauge progress of state and federal efforts in the multibillion dollar multidecadal Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan. Results emphasize the importance of time scale in assessing rain vs. managed flow components and indicate steady progress in the effects of managed flows on the hydrology of Everglades wilderness areas. Although the method is applied to Everglades hydrology, it is generally applicable to attribution of nonlinear dynamical interactions.
