Survey of Ghost Festival Rituals and Youth Cultural Practices in China

This dataset supports the ethnographic and qualitative analysis presented in the Survey of Ghost Festival Rituals and Youth Cultural Practices in China. It contains original empirical materials collected during fieldwork on youth festival practices related to China’s Zhongyuan Festival and Western Halloween in Guangzhou and Chaoshan regions.The dataset includes the following components:Photographs: Visual records of festival rituals, youth activities, and cultural scenes observed during fieldwork.Questionnaire survey: Original questionnaire data used to examine youth attitudes toward ghost-related festivals and cultural identities.Raw audio data: Unedited audio recordings of interviews, focus groups, and on-site observations.Transcription of text and encoding: Verbatim transcriptions of audio materials, together with coding and thematic annotations used for qualitative analysis.These materials document how young people negotiate local and transnational cultural meanings, construct dynamic identities, and engage with symbolic conceptions of ghosts in festive contexts. The data enable further research on youth culture, intercultural adaptation, ritual practice, and modernity in non-Western contexts.
