I order to study the mechanism underlying bile resistance of lactic acid bacteria, three strains of Lactobacillus paracasei were chosen. Strain NRIC0644 was originally isolated from fermented milk product, thereby of animal origin, whereas strains NRIC1917 and NRIC1981 were isolated from sugarcane wine and compost, respectively, thereby of vegetable origin. Preliminary test indicated vegetable-originated strains NRIC1917 and NRIC1981 were more resistant to cholate, the major component of bile compared to NRIC0644. The aim of the whole genome sequencing of these three strains was to elucidate the cause from which the difference in the bile resistance was brought about among these strains, and to find out common genetic feature for the bile resistant character. The information might be relevant for screening bile resistant lactic acid bacteria, which would contribute to develop useful probiotics.
