The list of short-horned flies (Diptera, Brachycera) of the Zhiguli Reserve

The presented list of species is the result of long-standing research of short-horned flies in the territory of the Zhiguli Reserve and a synthesis of previously published data from other researchers. 653 species of flies from 45 families are identified. The main material for this list was the author’s collections from 1980 to 2007. In addition, it includes the data from a number of publications (Dmitriyev, 1935; Novoderezhkin, 2005; Zimina, 1976a, 1976b, 1981; Tolstoguzova, 1996; Chuzhekova, Polyakova, 2007). In the Brachycera fauna, 653 species from 45 families are identified, of which 482 were the first for this territory. The greatest species diversity was observed in the families Syrphidae (163 species), Tachinidae (78), Tephritidae (57) and Asilidae (50). The methods of field collection included a traditional set of techniques used in faunal researches of insects (catching by butterfly net, capture by mowing along grass and shrubs, captures by light), followed by determination of the collected material, often using temporary genital preparations. Identification of a part of the material was verified by narrow specialists of ZIN RAS (St. Petersburg).
