Cryptomeria japonica BAC sequencing. Cryptomeria japonica strain:Shimotakai-8, Iiyama-15, Iiyama-18, Furukawa-3, Abe-6, Tenryu-7 and Shinshiro-7

The aim of the project is to characterize the genome of Cryptomeria japonica, an endemic coniferous species widely distributed in Japan. It has 11 pairs of chromosomes with an approximate genome size of 10.8 Gb. In this project, BAC clones were screened using DNA markers associated with phenotypic divergence found in natural populations. The isolated BAC clones were then sequenced using 454 GS-FLX sequencing technology. The genomic sequences obtained will contribute to the identification of genes affecting a range of important traits in C. japonica.
