Illumina paired-end sequencing technology was used to generate transcriptome sequence data for the four pine species including Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and three taxa from the P. mugo complex (P. mugo Turra (dwarf mountain pine), P. uncinata Ram. (mountain pine) and P. uliginosa Neumann (peat-bog pine)) derived from across different environmental gradients in Europe. By using a phylogenetic framework the study developed large genomic resources and new genetic markers for nuclear, mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes that will help to understand molecular evolution that shaped intra- and inter-specific evolution in this group of species with substantial market and ecological value.
