Selective autophagy of mRNA via RNA G-quadruplex recognition

Selective autophagy regulates mRNA homeostasis by targeting specific transcripts for degradation under stress conditions. We demonstrate that starvation-induced autophagy in wild-type HeLa cells promotes the selective clearance of mRNAs containing RNA G-quadruplex (rG4) structures, leading to altered RNA metabolite profiles. In contrast, ATG5 knockout HeLa cells, deficient in autophagy, exhibit impaired rG4-mRNA degradation, resulting in elevated RNA metabolite levels.
