Building on the rapidly increasing wealth of publicly available metagenome data, we reconstructed 2,074 genomes of large and giant viruses from diverse sampling sites spanning the globe. Using an approach reliant on copy numbers of conserved genes, we estimated genome completeness and contamination which led to the classification of 652 high, 1140 of medium and 282 low-quality giant virus metagenome-assembled genomes (GVMAGs).
