Aspartofthecurrentdebateontheopportunitiesandrisksofnanotechnologicalapplications,thedebateonpossiblecontributionstosustainabledevelopmentisbecomingincreasinglycontroversial.Itshouldratherbeconductedonamoreobjectivelevel.Thisobjectification,however,canonlybeachievedonacase-specificbasis,performing–asquantitativelyaspossible–arisk-and-benefitanalysistargetedtowardsthetotallife-cycle.Themethodologicalbasisforsuchasystemicview,however,isstilllargelylacking.
