VPRS 5880 Accounts Paid by Money Order, Drafts, etc.

From the period of its establishment in 1856 through to 1944 the library had been administered by a Board of Trustees who were responsible for managing and controlling the Public Library, National Museum, Industrial and Technology Museum and the National Gallery. In 1944 separate boards of Trustees were established for each agency.According to the Libraries Act 1928 the Trustees were required to submit an annual report that listed the proceedings of the corporation during the previous year to the Chief Secretary. The annual report was also required to contain a full account of the income and expenditure of the corporation which would be duly audited by the Auditor General. A copy of the report was to be laid before Parliament.The Trustees of the Library ordered a wide selection of reviews, magazines and newspapers from both Australia and overseas. This series consists of one volume recording the payment by money order of these various publications.This series would have been part of the standard accounting records of the Public Library. Under the provisions of the Libraries Act 1928 and the Public Library, National Gallery and Museums Act 1944 the Trustees of the Public Library were expected to record evidence of the receipt, expenditure and write offs of public monies.
