However, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020 had a huge impact on the sport industry, leading to the cancelation of many leagues and championships across all sports. One way in which professional sports were safely reintroduced was to play the games out in empty stadiums. In a survey conducted in the United States in May 2020, 19 percent of respondents stated that it was very important to have a crowd in the stadium to enjoy professional basketball on television.
